I was so terrified when I started this course. I was not sure I would be able to write an essay since it has been over 30 years since doing so. This course is designed to teach you how to write effective essays in clear simple language. The milestones have some tricky wording so just re-read the questions before answering. My suggestion to anyone starting this class is to open the Touchstone when you start each unit and begin your outline right away. Use the information from the unit to make adaption to your draft as you go. Once you finish the milestone and submit the essay, move onto the next unit and do the same thing. It really helped me put the concepts into perspective. It can take a week or so to get the graded essay back so just keep working on the next one while you wait. Laura was great and provided a lot of helpful feedback. Overall this was a great course and I found that I really enjoy writing and did pretty well at it.!

The course was difficult when it comes to essays and Unit 4 and 5 was really difficult even though it was an open book test. Otherwise all are well and awesome course still.

Please read all of this review to see why I gave it 3 stars! One on hand I want to give it 5 stars, and on the other I could score it 1 star: There were parts of the instruction which even with taking essentially an open book test, I was failing to answer correctly due to some cryptic phrasing and the like. This drove me nuts! BUT, On the other hand, the touchstone essays I had to write, while a challenge for me, were graded by a Fantastic Instructor! His feedback and insights really made me feel like digging in and trying much harder to get a better result for each of the 5 papers you will write. Thus, my final rating of three stars. YES! I would recommend this course if you have any interest in improving your written communication skills. My final score was 91%

My English 100 course with Sophia was great. It was fun, and I learned so much. The best part were the Challenges because I was able to download the .pdf documents to read and study offline. The entire experience was awesome because it fit 'my' schedule. I plan to take as many Sophia course as I can.

Very challenging course, considering there was not an instructor. Glad I was able to complete the course with a passing grade.

I didn't think I could write but I can. I can write work-related matters, but now I can really write. Thank you. Next up Engl 215. Thank you!!

FAQ

  • Q: What does "Try it for Free" mean?

A: The Free Trial allows you to access the course of your choice, or multiple courses. It gives you access to the first unit ("Challenge 1") in the course. This will let you meet the course instructors, sample the instructional content, and answer a set of assessment questions in the Challenge. You can also read the Student Guide and watch an Orientation Video to learn more about the course format, requirements, and resources.

Any work you complete in the Free Trial is saved, so if you decide to register, you do not need to repeat it. Of course, we also let you reset it and start over if you wish.
